Australian Shepherd | Irish lane kennel | Cedar Rapids Iowa
An Australian Shepherd puppy is a wonderful herding, family, gaming and protection dogs but can be high energy and need regular attention. Please do your research on this breed before adopting one.
Our adult Australian Shepherds are active in herding and fantastic guard/obedience dogs.
All puppies are allowed to go outside when it is weather and age appropriate.
~Australian Shepherds and multi drug sensitivity
What is dog multi drug sensitivity?
Dogs that have a mutation in the MDR1 gene, which inhibits their ability to remove certain drugs from the brain and can lead up to a buildup of toxins, may have severe adverse reactions to some common drugs, including seizures, tremors, disorientation, blindness, lack of muscle control or even death.
MDR1 And Drugs To Avoid
Aussies can carry a gene mutation called MDR1. Multi drug resistance. However, regardless of your Australian Shepehrds status EVERY AUSSIE SHOULD BE TREATED AS IF THEY HAVE THE GENE! This is because even dogs without the gene mutation have been known to suffer severe reactions, including death, from the same drugs that effect dogs with MDR1. To be on the safe side, never give your Australian Shepherd any drugs on this list.
Drugs to avoid:
Loperamide
Butorphanol
Acepromazine
