Breed Origins

Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu, whose name means “Lion Dog” in Chinese, is an incredibly playful and affectionate breed known for its big dark eyes and sweet expression. With a history that dates back over 1,000 years (and ancestors recorded as early as 1,000 B.C.) these small, sturdy, and fluffy dogs were treasured companions in Asia. Although most often associated with China, the breed is believed to have originated in Tibet and is related to the Lhasa Apso, later refined in China through crosses with Pugs and Pekingese to create the Shih Tzu we know and love today. Shih Tzus come in a wide variety of colors, typically weigh between 9 and 16 pounds, and are wonderful family, lap, and companion dogs known for their happy, loving personalities.
Chi Shi
The Chi-Shi is a charming small companion dog created by crossing the Chihuahua with the Shih Tzu. This hybrid is known for its affectionate, loyal nature and lively personality, often forming a very close bond with its family while still having a playful, spunky side. Chi-Shis are typically compact and sturdy with expressive eyes and a soft coat that can be short or medium in length, sometimes inheriting the Shih Tzu’s fluffy texture and the Chihuahua’s alert ears. Well-suited for apartments and smaller homes, they thrive on attention, enjoy short play sessions and walks, and do best with early socialization to build confidence and maintain their friendly, loving temperament.

Shorkie
The Shorkie is a small, affectionate designer breed created by crossing the Shih Tzu with the Yorkshire Terrier. Known for its sweet personality and playful energy, this hybrid makes a devoted companion that loves being close to its family and thrives on attention. Shorkies typically have a soft, silky coat that can range from straight to slightly wavy, along with bright, expressive eyes and a compact, sturdy build. Despite their tiny size, they are confident, lively, and full of character, doing well in apartments or smaller homes. With proper socialization and regular grooming, the Shorkie is a loving, spirited lap dog that brings both charm and companionship to any household.
