Frequently asked questions
General
Dogs, much like humans, live in social groups and adopt behaviors that are allowed or meet their needs. The owner's role is to act as the "Alpha dog" or group leader, establishing and teaching the dog which behaviors are acceptable and unacceptable.
Understanding puppies and early training:
• Fragility and Care: Puppies are as fragile as human babies. For the first few months, you must not harshly correct your puppy.
• Correction Method: Instead of harsh correction, redirect any unwanted behaviors. Do not scream or physically correct your puppy.
• Trust is Key: For effective training, puppies must first develop love and complete trust in you.
• Physiological Considerations: Puppies have a high metabolism, tiny bladders, and their brains are not yet fully developed enough to easily make the connection regarding the exact time and location for potty breaks.
• Training Philosophy: BE PATIENT. They will learn through consistency and patience.
Potty Training Essentials:
• Establish a Schedule: Create a schedule for your dog's bathroom breaks and stick with it consistently.
• Prevent Accidents: The most important rule for potty training is to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Taking your dog out regularly is crucial for this.
• Regular Outings and Praise: Even if your dog does not signal or ask to go outside, you must take them out. If they successfully use the bathroom outside, praise them enthusiastically.
Many excellent dog food options are offered by national brands based in the USA. However, you should avoid overly cheap or generic foods.
• Concerns with Cheap Foods: These lower-quality options may contain excessive amounts of indigestible fiber and low-quality proteins. This combination can lead to the production of large quantities of stool and may not provide your pet with the necessary nutrition.
• Ideal Composition: Quality dog food should primarily contain meat first, followed by small amounts of grains or vegetables.
Always consult your veterinarian for further guidance on the best nutritional choices for your dog.
Water Access:
Dogs should generally have access to cool, clean water at all times. The few exceptions include:
Limiting access overnight while puppy training.
Restricting access before surgery.
Diet Recommendations:
Protein Focus: Dog food should be primarily made of meat proteins. While a small amount of grain is acceptable in the diet, the focus should be on meat.
Avoid: Steer clear of generic foods and products made with ingredients sourced from overseas.
Recommended Brands: National brands made in the USA are among the best globally, unless you choose to prepare your own dog food.
Chewing Enrichment:
For your dog's downtime, large raw hides and large bones are excellent chews. Ensure these items are purchased from reputable pet stores and are of a size and type that will not splinter.
